Length Unit Converter

Length conversions are the most fundamental engineering conversions. Civil engineers work with feet and miles in the US or meters and kilometers internationally. Surveying uses chains, rods, and furlongs, while precision engineering requires mils and micrometers.

Length Units

m Meter SI

SI base unit of length. Defined by the speed of light. International standard for engineering measurements.

km Kilometer SI

Standard metric unit for road distances, pipeline lengths, and large-scale civil engineering projects.

cm Centimeter SI

Common metric unit for detail dimensions, material thickness, and laboratory measurements.

mm Millimeter SI

Standard precision unit in metric engineering drawings, structural steel, and manufacturing.

μm Micrometer SI

Also called micron. Used for surface finish specifications, particle sizes, and precision machining tolerances.

nm Nanometer SI

Used in semiconductor fabrication, nanotechnology, and optical wavelength specifications.

in Inch US

Primary US customary unit for detailed dimensions. Exactly 25.4 mm. Standard for pipe sizes, bolt sizes, and drawings.

ft Foot US

Primary US customary unit for building dimensions, elevations, and structural spans. Exactly 0.3048 m.

yd Yard US

Equal to 3 feet. Used in earthwork quantities (cubic yards) and some construction measurements.

mi Mile US

Standard US unit for road distances, pipeline lengths, and transportation engineering. Exactly 5280 feet.

nmi Nautical Mile Universal

Based on one minute of arc of latitude. Standard in maritime and aviation navigation. Exactly 1852 m.

mil Mil (Thousandth of Inch) US

One thousandth of an inch. Used for coating thickness, wire diameter, and PCB trace width.

fathom Fathom US

Equal to 6 feet. Traditionally used for measuring water depth in maritime applications.

ch Chain US

Surveyor's chain equals 66 feet (80 chains = 1 mile). Still used in US land surveying and property descriptions.

rod Rod US

Equal to 16.5 feet or 1/4 chain. Used in some US land survey descriptions and property law.

fur Furlong US

Equal to 660 feet or 10 chains. One-eighth of a mile. Occasionally found in land survey descriptions.

Å Angstrom Metric

Equal to 0.1 nanometers. Used in crystallography, atomic physics, and spectroscopy.
