Density Units
SI unit of density. Water at 4°C has a density of approximately 1000 kg/m³.
Common metric density unit. Water = 1.0 g/cm³. Numerically equal to specific gravity. Used in material science.
Equivalent to g/cm³. Commonly used in chemistry and chemical engineering for liquid densities.
Equivalent to g/cm³ and g/mL. Used in industrial applications and chemical process engineering.
Primary US density unit. Water = 62.4 lb/ft³. Used for soil, concrete, aggregate, and material densities.
Used for metal and material densities in mechanical design. Steel ≈ 0.284 lb/in³.
Common for liquid densities in US practice. Water = 8.345 lb/gal. Used in petroleum and chemical processing.
Used in UK and Commonwealth countries. Water = 10.02 lb/imp gal.
US FPS density unit for dynamics. Water = 1.94 slug/ft³. Used in fluid dynamics with F=ma in US units.
Used for material densities in some US manufacturing and product design contexts.
Used for aggregate, soil, and fill material densities in US earthwork and construction.
Dimensionless ratio of density to water at 4°C (1000 kg/m³). SG = 1.0 for water. Universal engineering reference.
